The Leadership Education in Child Health Nursing (LECHN) Fellowship Continuing Education Event:

Thursday, June 4, 2009, 11:00 AM - 12:00 Noon

Presenter: Judith A. Vessey, PhD, MBA, FAAN

Topic: "Caring to Confront: Evidence to Address Faculty Workplace Bullying, Harassment, and Horizontal Violence"

Nursing Building GO20

Dr. Vessey will describe Bullying, Harassment, and Horizontal Violence (BHHV) that occurs within the nursing-Faculty workforce and what can be done to overcome such bullying.

1 Hour of CEU credit will be offered – please bring your nursing license to the presentation.

Biographical Information: Dr. Vessey’s current research focuses on bullying, both in school-age children and the professional workplace. Her initial interest in this area of inquiry began when she witnessed the difficulties that children with chronic conditions faced on being included in school. It soon became clear that many of the bullying behaviors that began in the schoolyard translate to healthcare environments, and have a direct impact on the quality of care rendered. She, along with her colleagues Dr. Budin, Dr. DeMarco, and Dr. Gaffney, have formed the POST Group: Personal and Organizational Strategies for Transformation, which conducts research and designs evidence-based interventions for reducing bullying, harassment, and horizontal violence occurring in healthcare environments. The first results of this program of research have been published this spring in the Journal of Professional Nursing; other manuscripts are pending.
